Marae Visit

On Friday the 2nd of November we went to the Marae. Once we were welcomed on some people did the hongi with the speakers from the marae. We did greetings.  We listened to singing and saw people dancing.  We played some games. We had a competition to make the best koru out of the cut grass. There were two winners from the competition, one from Room 6 and one from Room7. We all crowded around the hangi pit to see them dig it up. When the hangi was dug up it smelt quite bad from the wet sacks and the leaves. Some of the hangi food got a little burnt because it got too hot by the stones.  Most people had the hangi for lunch. The hangi tasted great!

Shake Out

On the 26th of September 2012 we did a BIG shake out.  We had to drop, cover and hold to keep safe.  1.3 million people registered to take part in this event.  We did this so that we are prepared and know what to do when an earthquake happens.

Weta

Today some people from the Department of Conservation came.  When weta hatch they need to run away as fast they can or else their brothers and sisters will eat them!  The female weta lays the eggs in the soil.  Once an adult has laid the eggs it will die.  They can lay hundreds of eggs.  They only live for about two years.  Weta hide in gorse so that rats can't get them.  They do not have teeth like ours, they have little ones.  They can grow up to 7.5cms - that is just the body!  The female has ovipositers.

Fractions!

Today we are learning about fractions.  We found out that they can turn into almost anything. We cut up oranges and gave them to people. We learnt that halves can turn into wholes and that four eighths turn into a half.  We found out the two thirds is more than a half.  Two quarters make a half and eight eighths turn into a whole.  Then we ate our fractions!

Puriri Moth

I found this puriri moth in the toilets.  It laid 20 eggs in my hands.  I put it in a tree then I took this picture.  Also I left it in peace to lay it's eggs but it didn't seem like it was laying anymore.

Dribble the ball!

Room 6 have been doing fundamental skills.  This Friday it was soccer.  We learnt to dribble the ball and pass it to each other using the side of our foot.  We need to remember to look up when we are dribbling so we can see the defender.  Room 6 learnt how to stop the ball.  We also learnt how to zigzag between cones and then shoot goals.  Remember not to use your hands in soccer.  It was a great fundamental skills session!

Keeping Ourselves Safe

We have been learning how to 'Keep Ourselves Safe'.  One activity involved having to look after a raw egg for two days.  This was harder than we thought it would be.  Here are some of the things we learnt from this experience...

  •  not to carry it in my school bag
  • to always be near your egg
  • how to keep ourselves safe by knowing how it would feel to look after something
  • to keep an eye on it
  • how to look after something and enjoy it too
  • treat people how you treat eggs, nicely and gentle
  • it's like having your own baby
  • it's hard to look after an egg
  • that it is hard to remember to take it with me
  • make sure that I don't leave it behind and how to keep something special safe
