Shake Out

On the 26th of September 2012 we did a BIG shake out.  We had to drop, cover and hold to keep safe.  1.3 million people registered to take part in this event.  We did this so that we are prepared and know what to do when an earthquake happens.

Weta

Today some people from the Department of Conservation came.  When weta hatch they need to run away as fast they can or else their brothers and sisters will eat them!  The female weta lays the eggs in the soil.  Once an adult has laid the eggs it will die.  They can lay hundreds of eggs.  They only live for about two years.  Weta hide in gorse so that rats can't get them.  They do not have teeth like ours, they have little ones.  They can grow up to 7.5cms - that is just the body!  The female has ovipositers.
